Accommodation – Moscow & St Petersburg

Moscow

Hotel Cosmos (4 star)

A huge hotel built opposite VDNKh or All-Russia Exhibition Centre for the 1980 Olympics and designed by a joint team of Soviet and French architects. Advertises itself as a 4 star, but a more correct classification would be 4 star lobby, 3 star rooms. The lobby is spacious and you may be forgiven for thinking you have walked into a casino instead of a hotel. Rooms on higher floors have fantastic views of the city. There is a handy metro station very close by. They serve buffet food for breakfast and dinners, and the quality has improved dramatically over the past few years. This hotel is guilty of hiking its prices astronomically when there is an exhibition in town, but it's always busy and provides a good base for exploring Moscow.

Hotel Izmailovo Beta (3 star)

One of four hotels in a complex also built for the 1980 Olympic games. They are fairly identical buildings but are run independently. There is less glitz here than at the Cosmos, but it is great if you happen to be in Moscow at the weekend to visit Izmailovsky Park, a huge souvenir market right by the hotel. Also very conveniently located for the metro - 5 stops (about 20 minutes) on a direct line to Red Square.

Central House of Tourists (3 star)

A great Soviet named hotel, which has recently refurbished all its rooms and is providing really good competition for the Cosmos and Izmailovo complex. Not as big a lobby as the others, but adequate. Comfortable rooms and very good breakfasts and dinners. Situated in the "ecological zone" of Moscow, which is probably more of the Russians' idea of an ecological zone than a westerners.

St Petersburg

Azimut Hotel (3 star)

The tallest building in St Petersburg, with great views of the city from the breakfast room on the top floor. Located in a nice area of the city, Azimut has a spacious newly renovated lobby and rooms of a similar standard to other hotels in this category.

Park Inn Pribaltiskaya (4 star)

The Pribaltiskaya was recently added to the Park Inn chain of hotels, belonging to the same company as the Radisson SAS hotels. Situated on the gulf of Finland, literally on the sea, this huge hotel is always popular with our clients. The many facilities on offer mean that the hotel has a 4 star classification, although the rooms are still around the 3 star level.
